J.D. Salinger, the writer of the Catcher in the Rye, he didn't ever want to sell his copy rights of his novel to be made into a movie. My opinion on it would to agree to disagree because I could actually see this novel being turned into a movie or play but the people who'd be playing the characters would seriously have to capture the character perfectly. I believe that it might be a bit difficult to capture Holden's personality and finding someone that would portray him perfectly. This would either be made into an amazing movie or just have a horrible turn out. In the Cather in the Rye, there are distinctive types of emotions that could need to be put out. I understand where J.D. Salinger is coming from when he says he doesn't want to sell his copy rights because there is something very specific about this novel that not any one person would be able to represent. Although, I believe that this could be any amazing movie or play, using the right people, of course. Another thing would be that, the person producing the movie would take out critical moments in the novel or change something about it.
But if I had to make the Catcher in the Rye into a movie, I would place Robert Zemeckis as the director. The reason why I believe Robert Zemeckis would be great as the director because he was so great in Forrest Gump with narrating his life throughout the movie. It was done so cleverly. Also the way in the movie when he was just talking to random people about his life story, never telling them in anything else but his point of view.
As for Holden Caulfield, I could cast Josh Hutcherson because I believe he'd be able to capture Holden's personality. I really liked Josh in Hunger Games because he is able to defend himself. Which is way I believe he'd be great as Holden, a tough person that is able to stand up for himself and against the phony people.
I would have Sarah Bolger as Jane Gallagher because she is such a great actress, she'd be able to pull it off. Even though we never meet Jane in the novel, only from Holden's high praises towards her and that she is a very pretty dark haired girl. I also love her as Aurora in the t.v. show Once Upon a Time.
For Sally Hayes character I would have Emma Stone because in her previous movies she has been in. Emma shows that she could be a free spirited type of person and is able to take control of a situation. I loved her in Easy A because she just did everything so well and was funny at the same time. Plus she looks like a very spunky blonde, which is how i see Sally as.
I believe Mackenzie Foy would be great as Phoebe because she's a very cute young girl. I thought she was adorable in Twilight Dawn as Renesmee Cullen. I feel that she'd be able to pull of the little girl that doesn't take 'no' for an answer. Also could be a very intelligent little sister as Holden describes her to be.
